Insertional Achilles tendinosis is inflammation of the Achilles tendon at its attachment to the heel bone.
Insertional Achilles tendinosis often begins with a bone spur( Haglund’s deformity) that develops on the back of the heel.
Insertional Achilles tendinosis also commonly develops as a result of abnormal biomechanical forces in the foot. These abnormal biomechanical forces can be from trauma or from chronic overuse.
As the condition progresses the entire back of the heel becomes inflamed!
Should I visit a doctor?
Yes, inflamed tendons are weak tendons! If left untreated the extreme forces placed on the Achilles tendon can cause tearing or even a complete rupture.
What tests will my doctor perform?
An in office thorough examination of the foot and ankle is performed. The extent, location and the severity of the condition is further assessed using x-ray and other imaging modalities.
Conservative vs. Surgical treatment
In majority of cases patient are able to recover from conservative treatment;
- COLD LASER TREATMENT
- Custom made Orthotics
- Anti-inflammatory medication
- Eccentric strength training
- PRP (Plasma Rich Platelet) injections
- Physical therapy
- Activity restriction
- Immobilization
- Special walking boot
Surgical Treatment – Surgical repair of the achilles tendon is planned if conservative treatments have not been successful.
